Haydn Symphony No.84 in E-flat major (Hob.I:84) (Full Score)
In the winter of 1784-85 Joseph Haydn was commissioned by the Loge Olympique in Paris to compose six symphonies for its orchestra, the Concert de la Loge Olympique. The commission was probably initiated by Claude-François-Marie Rigoley, Comte d’Ogny, for the autograph manuscripts of the symphony found their way into his private library. Not only was D’Ogny a founding member of the Loge, he also played the cello in its orchestra, which consisted of both professional and amateur musicians. It had some fifty string players and at least double winds, including clarinets and trumpets. It is uncertain whether Haydn knew the size of the orchestra if so, he would hardly have dispensed with clarinets. On the other hand, as maestro di capella to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, he premièred the symphonies with the much smaller forces in Eszterháza, where no clarinets were available.
One of these six so-called “Paris” Symphonies is Symphony No.84 composed in 1786.
