Mozart Symphony No.11 in D major (K.84) (Full Score)
The Symphony in D major K.84 has come down to us in a set of parts formerly owned by Aloys Fuchs. Fuchs had both of these symphonies written out in score before bequeathing the parts to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Vienna, in 1843. The name of the composer is given on the title page as “Cavaliere Wolfgango Amadeo Mozart”, with the date “In Milano il Carnovale 1770” appearing in the top margin and “à Bologna, nel Mese di Luglio, 1770” at the bottom. The title page of the handwritten score, preserved today in the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin along with K.81, has a joint title that translates as “Two symphonies in D major for orchestra, composed by Leopold Mozart, chapel-master to the Archbishop of Salzburg”.
Two other sets of handwritten parts in the National Museum, Prague, have conflicting attributions: one to “Sig:re Mozart” (without Christian names) and the other to “Sig:re Carlo Ditters”. Because of this, the authorship has been a subject of debate among Mozart scholars. The two contradictory dates in the Viennese parts, on the other hand, at least coincide with the Mozarts’ itinerary, which found them in Milan from the end of January to the middle of March 1770. They returned to northern Italy from Naples and Rome in July after Wolfgang had been awarded the Papal Order of the Golden Spur. Apart from an excursion in September, they remained in Bologna from 20 July to mid-October 1770. Once Wolfgang had passed his entrance examination to Bologna’s Accademia Filharmonia (on 10 October), the two Mozarts resumed their journey to Milan with the beginnings of an opera score in their luggage (Mitridate). It follows that the piece may well have been started in Milan during the first winter and completed in Bologna.
