Mozart Symphony No.10 in G major (K.74) (Full Score)

The Symphony in G major K.74 survives in an autograph score (Biblioteka Jagiellonska, Kraków), albeit without a date in Mozart’s hand.  Mozart’s publisher, Johann Anton André in Offenbach, later wrote "Ouverture zur Oper Mitridate” above the piece, but the final three words of this title are crossed out.  The date “1770” in the same hand has obviously been altered as well, and originally read “1760”.  The possibility cannot be dismissed that the symphony was originally conceived as an overture for the opera Mitridate, Rè di Ponto, K.87.  However, the original year, before its alteration, argues against this theory, for the plans for Mitridate date from 1770 (Mozart did not receive the libretto until late July 1770).

The piece is modeled on an Italian operatic sinfonia; the movement headings are missing in the autograph and have been added by the editor.  The Rondo lacks repeat marks in front of the first da capo (m. 32), which were quite obviously omitted by mistake.  They are identified as editorial additions in the text.
