Mozart Symphony in F major (K.Anh.223) (K.19a) (Full Score)

It was only in October 1980 that a complete source for the Symphony in F major, K. Anh.223 (K.19a) resurfaced in a private collection.  Until then the work was known only from a violin part written up to m. 15 in the hand of Leopold Mozart.  The newly rediscovered set of parts, acquired by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, is written in Leopold’s hand and marked “compositore di 9 Annj” above the name of the composer (there is no date).

At the time of the concert in the Little Haymarket Theatre on 21 February 1765, Wolfgang had just turned nine years old (on 27 January).  This makes it at least conceivable that the F-major Symphony was composed at this time so that it could be performed along with the Symphony in D major (K.19) and perhaps the first symphony (K.16).  Admittedly Leopold’s indication of Mozart’s age is not a reliable source for the date, for he occasionally lowered the boy’s real age, undoubtedly for marketing purposes.
