Apel Geschichte der Orgel- und Klaviermusik bis 1700
GERMAN TEXT
Willi Apel's book, which was first published by Bärenreiter in 1967, is the standard work on early keyboard music and is still regarded as a pioneering work. In the form of individual and collective reviews, it provides information on almost all composers of keyboard music from that period. Important anonymous compositions and manuscripts are also included, as well as the development of keyboard instruments since antiquity. A book with such a wealth of material on the subject of keyboard music up to 1700 has not been written since. In this respect, the new edition, provided with an extensive bibliography and necessary corrections by Siegbert Rampe, a renowned harpsichordist and editor, fills a large gap.
Willi Apel (1903-1988) taught musicology at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. and at Indiana University in Bloomington. His publications ‘The Notation of Polyphonic Music’ (1942), ‘Harvard Dictionary of Music’ (1944), his series on the history of French music in the 14th century (1957-1962), his book on Gregorian chant (1958) and his series of editions ‘Corpus of Early Keyboard Music’ (1963 ff.) are still influential today.
